How much does Counselling Cost?Going private ~ not breaking the bank

You're thinking about going private for counselling and choosing Dean Richardson of Havant Counselling. Discover on this page how affordable weekly sessions with Havant Counselling can be…

Affordable Prices

Affordable private counselling costs. Highly experienced, fully qualified & effective Havant Counsellor, Dean Richardson MNCPS (Accred/Reg).

Pay as you Go

Pay for the counselling service you need. No one-size-fits-all costs.

Different costs for different services and session lengths.

Sliding Scale

Low income? Havant Counselling may be able to invite you to discuss a lower counselling session fee.

AffordING Private Counselling.

Only pay for the cost of the counselling service you need.

You pay-as-you-go for each weekly session at Havant Counselling. No big bills at the end of the month or, as seen by a growing number of private therapists, having to pay for sessions in advance.

  • Counselling fees are paid weekly, so there’s no big bill at the end of each month.
  • At Havant Counselling no VAT is added on the top of your fees (saving you 20% compared to counselling services that charge VAT).
  • For individual and couple counselling, fees default to 50-minute weekly sessions, but you have the option for 90-minute weekly sessions if you prefer. For group counselling, fees are per 90-minute weekly session.
  • All sessions default to once-per-week, but there is the option to come more times a week (following a discussion of your needs from counselling first).
Some people prefer to attend longer sessions (e.g. 90 minutes) and some people prefer to meet more regularly than once a week.

These are just some of the varied options to manage your counselling needs and budget. Options can be discussed any time before-or-during therapy as suits you.

Counselling Fees

Price Guarantee.

Your fee will not increase during the whole time you’re attending counselling at Havant Counselling. Compare this with other services where there will be a compulsory annual-increase (such as several local charity counselling services). The fee we agree upon when we start our work will not change for the entire time we work together*.

Whether we work for a handful of sessions, or for several years, the weekly fee you pay will remain the same as when we began.

* During our work should we agree for you to pay a lower fee (i.e. sliding scale / a fee you can responsibly afford) the fee you pay will be based upon your income and expenses. So, when your circumstances change (e.g. you gain a larger income, or your expenses change) then your fee will change to reflect this fairly. Similarly, if you have a temporary reduction in income and we agree a temporary reduction in counselling fees, your fee will resume at the normal rate when your income does. This is to sure that you are always paying what you can afford responsibly.
No Price Rise

Costs of Counselling.

Fees are paid weekly by card, bank transfer, or online via my website or your banking app. If in person, cash is accepted. A cancelled session will attract a cancellation fee, which is also payable on the week of the cancellation (details will be in a document sent to you when we discuss arranging our first session).

Counselling Fees:

STOP-PRESS: FEES ARE HELD FOR ANOTHER YEAR.

Due to the cost-of-living crisis, we are seeing more and more counsellors raising their per-session fees. However, Havant Counselling is keeping fees at the lower rates established during the 2019 Covid Pandemic.

Regardless of how short or long our work is, the per-session rate you pay at the start will be the same rate you’ll pay at the end: there will be no increases 👍

Notes:
*1 – The fee listed is per-person per-session. If the group chooses the total per-session fee may divided unequally across group members (eg so that some subsidise others’ fees). Provided the whole group’s total fee is met I have no problem with this arrangement.

Counselling Fees may be paid online (using my online/PayPal page) by card, bank transfer or a PayPal account. They may also be paid in person by cash, cheque or credit card. There are no surcharges for paying by credit nor debit card whether you choose to pay online or by card in person.

I ask for a refundable £30 deposit to secure our first session. This deposit is refundable if you cancel with greater than 48 hours notice, otherwise it covers expenses lost due to late cancellation.

Group Counselling is different to family counselling. I do not offer a family service.

How you’ll Pay.

I accept payments in person by cash, cheque, card, banking apps, bank transfer, Google Pay, Apple Pay or PayPal

If paying remotely, you may use your banking app, bank transfer or using your credit/debit card via my card processing services: PayPal or iZettle.

Read more about: Paying for your Counselling Online.

Electronic Payments

Chip-n-pin & Contactless cards Accepted in Person.

You may pay for your counselling session in person using your credit or debit card. Chip-n-pin, swipe and contactless cards are accepted.

Contactless cards currently limits a payment to a maximum of £45 (per-transaction).

Apply Pay & Google Pay Accepted in Person.

You may pay for your counselling session in person using Apple Pay or Google Pay, Smartphone and Smartwatch payments are accepted.

Apple & Google Pay have no maximum per-transaction limit, but Apple may not support a payment greater than £45, and Google Pay may require you to enter your pin for a payment greater than £45.

Bank Transfers & Faster BACS Payments.

BACS payments are payments made from your bank account to another person's bank account. There's no fees for BACS payments. You can use your SmartPhone's banking app to set up and make payments. You may ask for my bank details at any time.

Optionally, if you have your own PayPal account, you may use the payment form (above) to begin a PayPal payment and select your bank account to make a transfer.

Low Income Counselling Fees?

Private Counselling is not free of charge – it’s operated as a business (contrast with Charities that receive donations and raise funds). If you’re finding private counselling costs difficult to afford, I may offer a “sliding scale” – a per-session cost based upon your responsible ability to pay.

We will need to have an open discussion, to talk about your income, savings and your expenses so that we may negotiate a fee that you can responsibly afford.

IMPORTANT: if you are interested in discussing a lower fee, you must bring this up when you contact me. Places are strictly limited (because your fee would be personally subsidised by me) and if I have no places available – or cannot afford to sponsor your counselling – you will need to know this during our initial correspondence.
